Sushi is, in general, a combination of raw fish/ seafood/ vegetable and vinegared rice. There are several types of sushi. Nigiri-zushi is hand-pressed mounds of rice with a dab of wasabi and a slice of raw fish on top. Maki-zushi is rolls wrapped by seaweed.
Tempura is a Japanese dish of seafood or vegetables that have been battered and deep fried.
Yakitori is bite-size pieces of chicken skewered with bamboo sticks. They are charbroiled with radiant heat from charcoaled wood. Yakitori is usually served with salt, lemon juice or tare sauce.
Ramen is a Japanese noodle dish that originated in China. It is served in a meat- or fish-based broth, often flavored with soy or miso, and uses toppings such as sliced pork, dried seaweed, kamaboko, green onions and even corn. Almost every locality or prefecture in Japan has its own variation of ramen.
Soba is a type of thin Japanese noodle made from buckwheat flour. It is served either chilled with a dipping sauce, or in hot broth as a noodle soup.
Udon is a type of thick wheat-flour noodle popular in Japanese cuisine. Udon is usually served hot as noodle soup in a mildly flavoured broth, in its simplest form as kake udon, served in kakejiru made of dashi, soy sauce (shōyu), and mirin.
Takoyaki (literally fried or baked octopus) is a bite size ball-shaped pancake with a diced octopus and vegitables. It is usually topped with okonomiyaki sauce, mayonnaise, green laver, etc.
Okonomiyaki is a Japanese savory pancake with a variety of ingredients, which can vary greatly anything from meat and seafood to wasabi and cheese. The name is derived from the word okonomi, meaning "what you like" or "what you want", and yaki meaning "grilled" or "cooked."
Yakisoba noodles are similar to ramen noodles and made from wheat flour. It is prepared by stir-frying with bite-sized pork, vegetables (usually cabbage, onions or carrots) and flavored with yakisoba sauce, salt and pepper.
Taiyaki (literally "baked sea bream") is a fish-shaped cake commonly filled with red bean paste. Taiyaki is made using regular pancake or waffle batter. The batter is poured into a fish-shaped mold for each side. The filling is then put on one side and the mold is closed. It is then cooked on both sides until golden brown.
Mochi is a Japanese rice cake made of glutinous rice pounded into paste and molded into shape. In Japan it is traditionally made in a ceremony called mochitsuki. While also eaten year-round, mochi is a traditional food for the Japanese New Year and is commonly sold and eaten during that time.
The Japanese tea ceremony, literally means "the Way of Tea," is the ceremonial preparation and presentation of the powdered green tea called matcha. The tea ceremony is highly ritualized and the manner. Zen Buddhism was integral to the ceremony's development, and its influence pervades many aspects of its performance.
